Exploring Emotional Awareness and Coping Strategies for Young Adults
THE PROGRAM

What It Is

The “Set Your Senior Up for Success” program is designed to support your child starting from their junior or senior year of high school. Together, we will explore various tools such as meditation, mindfulness, breathwork, somatic resets, and other healing arts to effectively manage emotions. This foundation aims to create a peaceful, present, and focused school year. Introducing these habits while your child is still at home makes the transition to college smoother.
This highly customized program caters to each student’s unique needs. Many students begin the college testing and preparatory process in their junior year, making it crucial to address current anxieties and stressors. The focus is not only on emotional management but also on time management, preventing the feeling of being overwhelmed. The program’s custom nature allows students to tackle any issues causing dysregulation, providing an extra year of support.
For seniors, the emphasis shifts to include managing the stress of college applications and the emotions of leaving home for the first time.
All students will learn about manifesting and journaling, focusing on creating an internal and external environment that aligns with their inner peace and life goals. This aspect is not directed toward specific university admissions but rather what they want from their college experience and life in general, such as class sizes, seasonal changes, Greek life, or spirited sports programs.
Additionally, the program addresses managing relationships, including interactions with parents, teachers, siblings, and friends. This prepares students for living with a roommate and navigating new social dynamics. Most importantly, the program aims to instill self-worth, inner peace, and confidence, helping students find strength and pride in themselves rather than relying on external relationships or factors.
By participating in this program, your child will be better equipped to handle the challenges and stressors of high school and the transition to college, ensuring a smoother, more successful journey into adulthood.

What the Program Looks Like

Some young adults have a clear understanding of their emotions, while others may experience a broader, more diffuse range of feelings. A Wheel of Life exercise can be particularly beneficial for those in the latter category. This involves examining various aspects of the student’s life, such as school, family, physical environment, health, and social interactions, to pinpoint areas causing or potentially causing dysregulation.

For students who already know their stressors, we start there. Once we identify these triggers, we can introduce tailored tools and skills to manage them effectively. These coping strategies will be personalized, and I will facilitate their implementation, providing real-time feedback and modifications through ongoing communication.

Examples of Tools:

  • Difficulty with Transitions: Introducing a simple breathwork exercise, such as taking three deep breaths every time the school bell rings.
  • Overwhelm with Multi-step Projects: Provide a worry stone for the student to rub when feelings of overwhelm arise.
  • Emotional Distress from Social Conflicts: Guiding the student through a loving-kindness meditation to process emotions related to conflicts with friends or siblings.
  • Difficulty Focusing: Introducing binaural beats to aid concentration during study sessions or assignments.
  • Daily Mindfulness and Meditation: Helping the student establish a daily mindfulness and meditation practice, whether starting the day with meditation, practicing after school, or before bed. Additionally, incorporating mindfulness into everyday tasks like brushing teeth, eating, or showering enhances present-moment awareness.

The essence of this program is to identify what resonates with each child and create enjoyable, healing arts practices that become second nature. This approach ensures that as they transition into adulthood, they carry with them self-awareness, a robust self-care routine, inner peace, emotional intelligence, and an overall sense of well-being.

The program runs from September 2nd, 2024, to May 22nd, 2025, encompassing the full academic year. By committing to this program, you are committing to a comprehensive 9-month journey.

Navigating Junior and Senior Years: Emotional Resilience and Relationship Building

Students in their junior year face numerous anxieties and stressors, making it crucial to address these challenges. The focus is on emotional management and time management, helping prevent feelings of being overwhelmed. The program’s custom nature allows for targeted support that assists students in tackling any issues contributing to dysregulation.
As students enter their senior year, the focus shifts to managing the stress associated with college applications and the emotional aspects of leaving home for the first time. This period is pivotal, and our program provides the necessary tools to navigate these transitional challenges effectively.
All students engage in manifesting and journaling, which encourages them to create an environment that aligns with their inner peace and life goals. This practice is not aimed directly at collegiate admissions but rather at helping students articulate what they desire from their college experience, including aspects like class sizes, cultural life, and spirited sports programs.
In addition to academic pressures, the program addresses the management of various relationships, encompassing interactions with parents, teachers, siblings, and peers. This training prepares students to live with roommates and navigate evolving social dynamics, ensuring they build strong relationships while fostering self-worth and confidence.

Guidelines

Ethics

While this program is specifically designed for high school juniors and seniors, and we regard them as young adults, they are still minors under the care of their parents or guardians.

It is crucial to provide students with a safe space to express themselves and their emotions. I aim to be a supportive and trustworthy adult in their lives. However, if your child shares information with me that I deem essential for you to know, I will inform you immediately. If the matter is not urgent and is better communicated by the student, I will encourage them to share it with you. Should they choose not to, I will take responsibility for informing you.

Additionally, at the parents’ discretion, I am available to facilitate conversations between the child and parent if the student seeks additional support. This is entirely up to the responsible adult’s comfort level.

As a former teacher, I adhere to state requirements. If your child shares information that necessitates DCF or law enforcement notification, please understand that I am obligated to follow these guidelines from a moral and safety standpoint.

Responsibility

An essential component of this program is teaching young adults the value of responsibility. Instilling a sense of commitment and accountability is crucial as they prepare to transition into adulthood.

Scheduling and Confirmation: Students will be responsible for scheduling and confirming their monthly appointments. They will receive a confirmation request prior to their scheduled appointment, and it is their responsibility to confirm or reschedule the appointment at least 24 hours in advance.

Consequences for Missed Appointments: There will be consequences if a student cancels after confirmation or fails to attend their appointment. The enforcement of these consequences will be at the parent’s discretion. Once parents have agreed on the consequences, I will ensure they are implemented.

Makeup Sessions and Rescheduling Fees: Should your child miss or late-cancel an appointment, they may use one of the additional three sessions as a makeup, though these sessions are not intended for this purpose. If the parents choose not to use the makeup sessions or if all extra sessions have been used, a rescheduling fee will be incurred. The fee structure is as follows:

  • First missed appointment: $100 (discounted rate) rescheduling fee.
  • Second missed appointment: $125 rescheduling fee.
  • Third missed appointment: $150 rescheduling fee.

It is up to the responsible adult to decide whether the student or the parent will incur the fee. Missing a monthly appointment is an option but is not advisable.

Addressing Repeated Cancellations: After the third late cancellation, a meeting with the child and parent will be held to reassess the commitment to the program and determine the best way to move forward. The goal of this program is to equip students with the skills to lead peaceful and present lives, and frequent missed appointments necessitate a reevaluation to find a suitable solution for the student.

Emergency Situations: We understand that emergencies happen, and occasional late cancellations may be unavoidable. In such cases, we will handle them with the understanding that we are all human.

Additional Support

The program includes three additional sessions intended to provide extra support during exceptionally overwhelming periods. If your student encounters an event that causes increased dysregulation, having more than one appointment in a month can be highly beneficial. These three extra sessions are available for use throughout the duration of the program.

If the student requires more than the included three extra sessions or a parent needs an additional monthly session to discuss their child, these appointments can be arranged at a special rate of $100 per session.

Commitment

By enrolling in this program, you are committing to the full duration from September 2nd, 2024, to May 22nd, 2025. Payment for the program is required on the 1st of each month, or it can be paid in full at the beginning of the program.
